How to register a .com.np domain in Nepal

A .com.np domain is free to register and free to keep. It is issued by the .np registry, which is run by Mercantile Communications, through the website register.com.np. There is no yearly fee.

Who can register

Anyone in Nepal with a valid identity document, and any organisation registered in Nepal. The registry approves a name when it matches the applicant: your own name for a personal domain, or the registered name of your company or organisation for a business domain.

Documents you need

• For a person: a clear scan of your citizenship certificate, front and back, or another government photo ID the registry accepts.
• For a company or organisation: the registration certificate, plus the PAN or VAT certificate.
• A cover letter addressed to the registry asking for the domain. It should give your name or organisation, the domain you want, what it is for, and your email and phone number.
• If someone applies on behalf of a company, a letter from the company authorising them.

Steps

1. Create an account at register.com.np.
2. Search for the name you want and choose .com.np (schools use .edu.np, organisations .org.np).
3. Enter the name servers of your hosting. If you do not have hosting yet, ask your hosting provider for them first.
4. Upload the documents and the cover letter, then submit.
5. Wait for the approval email. Applications are usually reviewed within one to three working days.

Common reasons an application is rejected

• The domain name does not match the name on the documents.
• The scan is unclear or only one side of the citizenship was uploaded.
• The cover letter is missing.

After approval

Point the domain to your hosting, switch on SSL so the address shows a padlock, and create email addresses on the domain so your business stops using personal Gmail accounts.
